Shirring is formed with two or multiple rows of gathering and is decorative way of controlling fullness. Light weight fabrics are the most appropriate for shirring, they may be either crisp or soft. Rows of shirring must be straight , parallel, and equidistant. Your pattern should specify the areas to be shirred, these can range from a small part, such as a cuff, to an entire garment section, such as bodices. They be as close together as 6 mm or as far apart as 2 or 3 cm. No-iron fabrics are good because it is difficult to press shirring without flattening it. CHOICES OF FABRICS; Excellent choices are 1. Voiles 2. Batistes 3. Crepes 4. Jerseys How to take measurement for Shirring clothes ? First you need to measure how much fabric you will need, then multiplied the measurement by two plus seam allowances to get the total width of the dress. The shirred part will stretch over to fit the bust nicely , without feeling too tight. How to Shirr fabric? 1. Stitch repeated rows of gathering stitches over selection to be shirred, spacing rows an equal distance apart. Gather each row separately by pulling on bobbin thread. 2. Measure first row when it is shirred and make sure that all subsequent rows are gathered to the same length. 3. Secure rows, by tying the thread ends on each row, then place a line of machine stitches across the ends of all rows . 4. Enclose the thread ends in a small pin tucks to hold them securely. 5. If shirring is to be joined to a flat piece, first place gathering stitches in seam allowance, one row just inside the seam line and a second 6 mm. 6. Stitch rows for shirring , and shirr to desired width. 7. Gather and attach seam as specified in basic procedure of gathering. 8. The Fullness produced by shirring should be presses with great care 9. If it is not, the weight of the iron will flattern the folds and ruin in the intended effect. 10. Press on the wrong side, into the fullness, with just the point of the iron .
